Reading music or learning by ear

One of the main stumbling blocks to learning tunes is not knowing what method to follow.  There are two basic ways; by ear (you play what you hear) and from music (reading the dots).  Of course you can use both and indeed that is what we would recommend.  Learning by ear and reading music are both important skills which you are not born with but must pick up as you go along. There is no doubt about it, it can be hard work but we should say right now, no one expects you to be an expert quickly and with only a modest level of skill you can get a long way.  The information here is to help you get to a reasonable level with minimum pain.  We will begin with learning by ear.
